CURRENT RESEARCH LANDING Families by State

MARYLAND

The first LANDING family line begins with Thomas Landon/Landing (born about 1795) [nine identified generations, 71 LANDING names] who was married to Rachel Gunby Powell.  I have identified five of their children.  This family lived near Pocomoke City, Worcester County, Maryland for almost 150 years.  The second LANDING family line begins with William D. Landing (born about 1808 at Rehobeth, Somerset County, Maryland) [six identified generations, 106 LANDING names] who was married to Leah A. Townsend (born about 1815).  I have identified 12 of their children.  During the 1860s many members of this family moved to Missouri.     The third LANDING family line begins with Michael Landing (born 1771-1774) [five generations identified] who was married to Sally Trehern.  I have identified two of their children, there may be two other children (according to M.K. Miles in the MilesFiles at Eastern Shore Public Library) but I am still reviewing those connections.  The family lived near Pocomoke City, Somerset County, Maryland.  Parts of the third family moved to Tangier Island, Virginia in the 1820s and then to Mathews, Virginia in the 1850s. The first three LANDING family lines lived within 7 miles of each other.  These three families are probably related but I haven't found the connection, yet!

On 7 Nov 1989 while looking in the Wicomico County Library, Salisbury, Maryland I found the book "Citizens of the Maryland Eastern Shore 1659 - 1750" by F. Edward Wright which contained the following information on pages 51 and 52

1748 Aug 31, Sep 16.  The Inhabitants of Coventry Parish, Somerset and Worcester Counties.  To Gov. Samuel Ogle and the Council.  The petitioners have been denied the liberty of the church and the chapel of ease by Capt. John Williams, Capt. John Dennis, Capt. Sampson Wheatly, Samuel Adams, William Duett, Collins Adams, and William Smith, vestrymen and wardens of the parish; they pray that they may have free access to the Gospel at the discretion of Rev. Nataniel (Whitaker, rector).  Signers: ..., Henry LANDING, ...

Henry LANDING is the oldest LANDING that I have been able to locate in Somerset and Worcester County Maryland.

Matthew Wise wrote a letter on 16 Oct 1980 to Ruth Naylor and then again on 25 July 1981.  The first letter discusses the LANDONs in Somerset County, Maryland during 1750s-1840s and the second letter gives more details and draws a probable family tree from Henry Landon to Matthew Wise and Ruth Naylor.  Neither one of Matthew Wise's letters mentions a Michael Landon/Landing.

Some other Maryland LANDING names in the early 1790-1800s include:
